WHAT IS BETTER – INVISALIGN OR BRACES?

Braces have been used for straightening teeth for several decades. Their aim is to correct malocclusion (crooked teeth), so that the overall facial appearance is improved. The techniques in use do not do this overnight, but they have to remain in the mouth for a significant period of time. The commonest types of braces in use are metal braces, but while they are straightening the teeth they are also clearly visible to others. In recent years, an attempt to try and solve the problem of aesthetics with a new type of braces has been developed, called Invisalign. As the name implies, they are designed in such a way that they cannot be easily seen. However, both traditional braces and Invisalign aligners have advantages and disadvantages that should be considered when deciding what to choose – Invisalign or braces.

The clearest advantage when using Invisalign is cosmetic, as the aligners are totally transparent, which means they are more difficult to spot than metal braces. Adults who are more self conscious, but want their teeth straightened, use this method in preference to metal braces, which are more often worn by adolescents and children. A further advantage is that Invisalign is removable, so it is far easier to consume food than with metal braces

On the clinical side, aligners tend to avoid some of the adverse effects of conventional fixed braces. This is particularly so in relation to any effects on the gums and surrounding tissues. Many of the other types of orthodontic treatment can cause the teeth’s roots to shorten, which is referred to as root resorption. Also, tooth decay is a real possibility with the use of traditional braces, because it is not possible to remove them for cleaning and eating. On the comfort side, the aligners apply less force every week and less pain is experienced than with metal braces. Fixed braces are modified at six week intervals and greater force is applied.

The success of both conventional fixed braces and Invisalign aligners will depend on the cooperation and habits of the user. The overall success of the Invisalign aligners is determined by wearing them for at least 22 hours every day for the orthodontic treatment period. This differs from traditional braces that cannot be removed. The patient has to be methodical in their care of Invisalign, otherwise they will not work.

On the negative side, some teeth may not respond sufficiently to Invisalign, such as the lower premolars, because their shape is more rounded. It may be harder for the aligners to grip these teeth and apply the necessary rotational force. Invisalign treatment is unsuitable for those teeth that need to be moved vertically, which includes teeth that are high in the gum line compared to other teeth. Aligners work by applying a certain amount of pressure on the teeth. Teeth that are positioned too high, or too low, need to be gently pulled into the right place. Some patients grind or clench their teeth at any time of day. This action can damage Invisalign aligners, something which does not happen with traditional braces

In summary, studies have indicated that Invisalign has a greater ability to close up spaces and fix anterior rotations and the marginal ridge heights of the teeth. Also, this orthodontic treatment time takes four months less than conventional fixed braces. However, when there are malocclusions (crooked teeth) that have created mild crowding, then fixed braces offer superior results.
